Impeachment Plot Against Alia Can't Work — Former Speaker

Former Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly and immediate past Nigerian Ambassador to Namibia, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Terhemen Tarzoor, has alleged a plot by some politicians of Benue extraction to destabilize the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia.

Tarzoor made the allegation during a media interaction at the Benue State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Makurdi.

He said, “We wish to state categorically and without any fear of contradiction that this plot, just like many such previous plots, including the impeachment plot against the Governor, will definitely fail because it is anchored on falsehood and mischief.”

According to him, credible information at his disposal indicated that the sum of ₦2 billion had been raised by what he described as “malicious-minded people” to mobilize forces against the success of the Alia administration.

Tarzoor alleged that the agenda to make the state ungovernable would take effect from December 1, 2025.

He claimed that “two elected members who are serving at the National Assembly have been assigned the role of spokespersons of the evil-minded group.” However, he declined to disclose the identities of those allegedly involved or the source of his information despite journalists’ persistent inquiries.

The former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) further alleged that the ₦2 billion fund was intended to mobilize youths for violent protests against the Alia administration to take place simultaneously in Makurdi, Gboko, and other major towns across the state.

According to him, the objective of the plot was to undermine the popularity and credibility of the government.

Tarzoor also alleged that the masterminds had concluded plans to discredit the Alia administration by attacking its accomplishments, particularly in the area of road infrastructure, including the underpass projects in Gboko and Makurdi and other ongoing road constructions.

He lamented that the alleged group was planning to sponsor numerous petitions against key officials of the government to anti-corruption agencies, accusing them of mismanaging public resources. According to him, the intent was to discredit Governor Alia before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Condemning the alleged plan, Tarzoor cautioned those he described as “enemies of Benue State” to desist from such “ignoble acts” before “the wrath of the people visits them.”

He added that it was only a matter of time before the identities of those who contributed to, and currently hold, what he called the “evil funds” would be made public.

Tarzoor concluded, “Let it be known that we shall not fold our arms and watch anybody, no matter how highly placed, distract our Governor from the great works he is doing for the people of this state. Silence would be a betrayal of the masses.”
