BSUTH Set For International Summit, To Launch N2 Billion Fund For Autism And Special Needs Care

Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) Dr. Stephen Hwande discloses that October 16–17, 2025 will host the Second International Health Investment Summit and Scientific Exhibition within the medical facility in Makurdi. 

The CMD added that the event would serve as the landmark which redefines healthcare delivery not only in the state but also North-Central region.

According to the Chief Medical Director, major highlight of the summit would be unveiling of the 2 billion naira endowment fund to expand the hospital’s Therapeutic Centre for Autism and Children with Special Needs. He clarified that the aim was to raise funds and provide a world-class care facility for children living with developmental challenges. Dr Hwande noted also that the initiative would make BSUTH the regional leader in pediatric neurodevelopmental services.

He disclosed further that the expansion effort would feature highly advanced diagnostic equipment, multidisciplinary rehabilitation facilities and professional training programs for healthcare providers as well as caregivers. 

In line with the development, the CMD explained that the upgraded hospital would become the centre to cater for the needs of both the local and international patients offering the "services previously accessible only abroad." 

According to him, the summit theme “exploring medical tourism potentials at BSUTH: prospects and challenges, would bring together medical experts, the investors, policymakers, and international partners to discuss strategies for positioning BSUTH as a hub for medical tourism in West Africa."

He stated that objective was to address economic benefits and revenue opportunities for BSUTH and Benue State which is also the role of technology and telemedicine for attracting and managing international patients, as well as importance of the global partnerships and networks in expanding healthcare reach.

The Chief Medical Director who described the summit as “catalyst for transformation” said also that it would “unlock opportunities for specialized care while boosting the economy of Benue State.” He clarified further that emphasis would be on the need to make the centre a focus for autism care and medical tourism and the development reflects the hospital’s vision for inclusive and innovative healthcare delivery policy.

The medical centre provides Nigeria a multi-billion-naira opportunity because, many patients currently travelling abroad for such services not available locally would access with satisfaction added to its attraction of patients from the neighbouring states.
