Asokoro Street Renamed to Celebrate Business Icon, Sam Maduka Onyishi

The leadership Federal Capital Territory have renamed a street in Asokoro, Abuja, in honour of distinguished industrialist and philanthropist, Chief Dr. Sam Maduka Onyishi, acknowledging his significant footprint in Nigeria’s economic and social development.

The street unveiling took place on Saturday under the coordination of the FCT Administration. Speaking on behalf of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council’s Street Naming Unit, Mr. Charles Adikwu said the recognition reflects the administration’s appreciation of Onyishi’s role in driving enterprise growth, job creation, and community upliftment.

Adikwu applauded the founder of Peace Mass Transit for building what he described as a robust indigenous business network that has grown from “humble origins to national prominence.” He added that Onyishi has become a central figure in Nigeria’s private sector ecosystem, particularly as a major employer of labour.

Onyishi oversees a diverse portfolio of institutions, including Globus Bank, Peace Microfinance Bank, Peace Oil & Gas, and Peace Mass Transit, and also serves as the Chancellor of Sam Maduka University, Akwegbo, Enugu. According to Adikwu, the Onyishi Group collectively employs more than 150,000 people across multiple industries—an accomplishment he said places the entrepreneur among the country’s foremost economic drivers.

Explaining the importance of naming streets after deserving individuals, Adikwu noted that the practice enhances navigation, supports emergency services, and provides clear identity for areas within the capital city.

“With this new designation, the location is easily traceable. In cases where emergency responders need to act swiftly, identifying an address like No. 7 Sam Maduka Onyishi Street becomes straightforward,” he said.

Peace Mass Transit’s Regional Manager (North), Mr. Ngwu Jude Chinweike, also commended the FCT authorities for spotlighting citizens whose work strengthens national development. He described the gesture as a source of inspiration for individuals committed to societal progress.

“This kind of honour sends a message that meaningful contributions are noticed. It will motivate others to invest in their communities as our chairman has done,” he said.

Chinweike disclosed that the street has begun generating interest from security agencies and commercial organisations, adding that the Onyishi Group is prepared to support the beautification and ongoing improvement of the area.

“Because this road now bears our chairman’s name, we consider it part of our responsibility to help maintain its standard,” he remarked.

Chief Dr. Sam Maduka Onyishi, widely celebrated for his philanthropy and wide-ranging business initiatives, continues to play an active role in Nigeria’s transportation, banking, energy, and education sectors.
